U.S. Military Ranks

Every grade from Private to General of the Army — the complete rank structure for all six branches of the United States Armed Forces.

Rank Structures by Branch

The U.S. military uses a standardized pay-grade system shared across all branches — Enlisted (E-1 to E-9), Warrant Officer (W-1 to W-5, where applicable), and Commissioned Officer (O-1 to O-10) — though rank titles and insignia differ by service.

Understanding Pay Grades

Every U.S. military rank maps to a pay grade that determines base salary and benefits. Enlisted grades run E-1 through E-9, warrant officer grades run W-1 through W-5 (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard only), and commissioned officer grades run O-1 through O-10. Five-star grades (O-11) exist only by wartime act of Congress and have not been awarded since World War II.
