Our Commitment to Accuracy
USMilitaryAtlas is committed to providing accurate, well-sourced information about the U.S. military. We take factual errors seriously. When we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and transparently.
All substantive factual content is drawn from official U.S. government publications, peer-reviewed historical records, or established defense journalism. A full list of our primary sources is available on our Sources page.
Content Categories
USMilitaryAtlas publishes three broad categories of content:
- Reference content (branches, academies, ranks, history) — Written and reviewed by our editorial team, sourced from official government publications. Updated when official information changes.
- Aggregated news — Headlines and summaries pulled automatically from official DoD RSS feeds and trusted defense journalism outlets. We do not editorially modify news articles. Original reporting credit and links are preserved.
- AI-generated content(Captain Liberty) — Chat responses and weekly essays generated by OpenAI's GPT-4o model using topic-specific system prompts. See the AI Disclosure section below.
AI Disclosure
USMilitaryAtlas uses artificial intelligence in two ways:
- Captain Liberty chat — The Ask Captain Liberty feature is powered by GPT-4o (OpenAI). Responses are generated in real time. We apply topic guardrails to restrict the AI to U.S. military–related questions and to avoid inaccurate, misleading, or inappropriate responses. However, AI can make mistakes. Captain Liberty responses should be treated as educational starting points, not authoritative sources. Always verify important information with official sources.
- Captain Liberty essays — Weekly essays published under the Captain Liberty byline are AI-generated using curated prompts. They are reviewed for obvious errors before publication but are not line-edited as thoroughly as our reference content.
All AI-generated content is labeled. We do not publish AI content without disclosure.
Political Neutrality
USMilitaryAtlas is non-partisan. We cover the U.S. military as an institution — its history, structure, traditions, and people. We do not editorialize on political matters, endorse candidates or parties, or take positions on defense policy debates.
News aggregation reflects what trusted defense outlets are reporting. Including a story does not constitute an editorial endorsement of its framing or conclusions.
Corrections Policy
We welcome corrections from readers. If you believe something on our site is factually incorrect, please email us with:
- The URL of the page containing the error
- A description of the incorrect information
- A source supporting the correct information
We will review corrections within 5 business days. Confirmed errors are corrected promptly. Significant corrections to reference content may include a correction notice on the page.
Affiliate & Advertising Disclosure
USMilitaryAtlas may display advertisements served by Google AdSense and other third-party ad networks. Advertising relationships do not influence editorial content. We do not accept payment for favorable coverage, and advertisers have no input into our editorial decisions.
We may include affiliate links to books, products, or services relevant to U.S. military history and education. These are always disclosed. Affiliate revenue helps support the site.
