Thiells N.Y. resident takes command of the 106th Regiment (Regional Training Institute)
U.S. Army Col. Steven Perry, of Thiells, New York, assumed command of the New York Army National Guard’s 106th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) from Col. William Benton Murphy during a ceremony at Camp Smith on Aug. 8, 2026. Perry, who brings extensive military police, emergency response, and cybersecurity experience, takes charge as Murphy transitions to the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, Virginia. Presided over by Maj. Gen. Michel Natali, the ceremony highlighted Perry's focus on modernizing training while honoring Murphy with the Legion of Merit for his two-year tenure, during which the institute earned a 98.5 percent score on its U.S. Army accreditation.
