Gen. Francis Donovan, commander of SOUTHCOM, ordered the strike.
“Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking,” reads the SOUTHCOM post on social media site X.
The post did not include further details on the confirmed intelligence.
“When I ordered the establishment of Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, it was precisely for this purpose: to accelerate, synchronize and execute lethal actions against these destabilizing narco-terrorist networks,” Donovan said in the post. “We are committed to imposing total systemic friction on narco-terrorists – disrupting their operations, dismantling their leadership and eliminating cartel terror across the region.”
It is not clear what effect the strikes have had on the drug trade in the United States. The Trump administration said the alleged drug boats carrying fentanyl and cocaine, although it has provided little public evidence of the claims.
Fatal drug overdoses have been falling since August 2023, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Drug overdoses dropped by approximately 2.5 percent between February and March. December to January and January to February saw drops of less than 1.5 percent. Generally, drug overdose fatalities have dropped between 1-2 percent each month.
CDC data do not show a significant decrease after the introduction of the drug strikes.
